Being a parent is hard work. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would argue that.
However, there is an even tougher job and that is being a kid. Especially in today’s world.
Some of us only had to deal with the peer pressure, bullying and expectations of the kids in our class. What we saw on TV were cartoons and that was it.
Today’s kids have a million different distractions and a billion of different false idols that they think they need to follow. If you aren’t being teased in person there is a chance you might be teased over social media.
There are pressures coming from all angles and some of them aren’t readily apparent.
But your kid is lucky because they have you around. You are their sidekick in this superhero journey of life.
You might not notice it now but the things you say to you child today will have a profound impact in what they do tomorrow.
I truly believe that the best way to raise a kid is through encouragement and not criticism. There are always life lessons to teach but do so in a way that encourages them to continue to push forward in life.
We all know they will be dealing with a ton of stuff when we aren’t around so it’s important that we ensure that their time with us is being used to build them up.
21 Positive Affirmation to Tell Your Child
My mom always told me “good job”. It was a little thing but it went a long way.
Everything that I did, I did without pressure because I knew my mom would be happy with the effort.
She also always told me she loved me. I knew that no matter how bad things were I had her to turn to because she loved me.
Who is cutting onions around here? My eyes can’t stop sweating!
Anyways, here are 21 positive affirmations that you can tell your child.
1. You Make Me Proud
The last thing any child wants to feel is the disappointment of a parent. Parents get angry. Parents get sad.
But a disappointed parent? That’s a no-no.
Let your child know that they make you proud in everything that they do.
2. You Have Great Ideas
Remember the imagination you had as a kid? You know when you’ve become an adult? Your imagination dies.
That’s what I hated when I worked for other people. My ideas would get shut down.
I love coming up with new ideas! Imagining new ways to make things better is one of the most fun things that anyone can do.
Don’t be the one that kills your child’s imagination. All of their ideas are great. Even the ones that get you dirty.
3. You Don’t Have to Be Perfect to Be Great
At some point, your child is going to end up on Facebook or Instagram and they are going to see social media celebrities where everything they do makes them look perfect. This can easily make them believe that to be great you have to be perfect.
But you know the truth.
These celebrities only present their best sides. They are far from perfect.
Don’t make your child think that perfection is the only option.
4. You Are Important
Is there a worse feeling in the world than thinking you aren’t important to someone? We all know how tough heartbreak is when you don’t feel like you are important to the person you love anymore but what if you felt there was nobody in your life that thought you were important?
I couldn’t imagine that feeling and no child should ever have to experience that.
5. I Believe You
There are going to be moments when you aren’t around your child and something happens. When they tell you about it are you going to believe them or doubt them like many people will in the future?
6. I Believe in You
Not to sound like a Disney movie but sometimes all a person needs to succeed is a little belief. Knowing that someone believes in you to accomplish something can be the difference between becoming an astronaut and becoming the person who builds model space shuttles.
7. You Can Say No
Honestly, this is probably something that most adults need to tell each other.
Saying no is okay.
8. You Can Say Yes
On the opposite end of the spectrum, you don’t want to be the person that always says no.
9. I Know You Did Your Best
This one is tough because some of you are reading this thinking that your child didn’t do their best but maybe that’s because they aren’t sure what their best is yet.
Helping them figure out that they always have another level to strive for is what a parent should be doing and while that is happening let them know that you know that they did their best is what is needed.
10. You Were Right
They’ll have plenty of time to argue with people when they’re adults and try to prove people wrong all of the time. Till then, when they are right you need to let them know they are right.
You aren’t in a battle with them for the debate team.
11. We Can Try Your Way
How will they know what they are doing if you never try their ideas? Sometimes you just have to let go of the wheel and try things their way.
12. You Are Worth It
If you are doing things right, at some point they will understand all that you do for them. When that happens and they ask why you do it, let them know it’s because they are worth it.
Sure it’s the same line you’ll see in any superhero movie but you are their superhero so it all makes sense.
13. You Make Me Happy
Most of the parents I know are extremely happy when they find out they are going to have a child.
Then they are happy when the child is born.
The next time they are that happy? When the child finally moves out.
Be different. Let your child know that they always bring happiness around with them.
14. Being Around You Is Fun
I truly believe that it’s important that we all maintain some type of childlike wonder in our heads. Too many of us are stiff and boring adults.
Having kids is your shot of having that type of fun again if you are worried about embarrassing yourself around other adults.
Let them know it’s fun being around them by making sure you start being fun around them.
15. I Can’t Wait to Hear About It
How many boring meetings have you sat in during your lifetime?
How many times have you had people complain to you?
We’ve all been in situations where we no longer want to hear the other person speak.
You should always want to hear what your child has to say. Make sure they know that.
16. Don’t Be Afraid to Be You
I’ve been called many different things in my lifetime. Some good, some bad. However, I’ve never been accused of trying to be someone I’m not.
I’m comfortable in my skin
17. I’m Excited to Spend Time With You
At some point, there will be a time where you kid wants to spend more time with their friends than with you. Before that happens let them know how excited you are to spend time with them so they understand how valuable it is to you.
18. It’s Good to Be Curious
My brother and I are complete opposites in how we learn. When I come across something new I dive into it hardcore because I’m extremely curious and I like to know how things tick.
That’s how I became a blogger. I wondered how successful blogs were made and I dove into them until I became an expert at them.
My brother, on the other hand, sits back and waits till someone explains everything to him. He always tells me he wishes he was as smart as me but the only difference is that I’m constantly curious while he is constantly waiting.
Don’t let your child lose their curiosity.
19. What You Did Was Awesome
Pats on the back.
Good job.
When was the last time someone told you that?
20. That’s a Great Question
This ties into being curious. How often does someone have a question about something but they don’t ask it because they are either scared or embarrassed?
21. I Love You
The most important one of all, right?
